Cracked Screen: Repair or Replace?

A cracked phone screen does not always mean you need a new phone. If the display is the only major fault and the device still meets your needs, a professional screen repair can be the more practical choice.

The right decision depends on the damage, the phone’s age and software support, other faults, and the complete cost of each option. This New Zealand guide helps you compare those factors before spending money.

Technician assessing a cracked phone screen before repair
An inspection can reveal whether the crack affects only the glass or the display, touch layer, frame or nearby components.

The short answer

Repair is usually worth considering when the screen is the main fault, the phone remains fast and reliable, essential apps still work, and the quote is comfortably below the cost of an equivalent replacement.

Replacement becomes more sensible when several expensive faults have developed, the phone no longer receives the support you need, or it cannot reliably handle your everyday tasks.

This is a common issue for New Zealand phone owners. Consumer NZ reported that display or touchscreen problems accounted for 28% of serious phone faults in its survey, while battery or charging faults accounted for another 25%. Yet fewer than one in five screen or battery faults were repaired. Read the Consumer NZ findings.

A practical way to compare the cost

Divide the complete repair quote by the cost of a genuinely equivalent replacement. Use that percentage as a comparison point, not an automatic verdict: the phone’s remaining software support, condition and other faults still matter.

How Raytech assesses the decision: our current repair process starts by confirming the exact model, screen symptoms, frame condition, other known faults and replacement-part availability before a quote is finalised.

Check the damage before deciding

The word “screen” can mean the outer glass, the touch layer and the display panel. A visible crack does not show which layers are affected, so note every symptom:

  • Cracked glass, normal image and touch: damage may be concentrated near the outer surface, but it can spread.
  • Black spots, coloured lines or flickering: the display panel is likely damaged.
  • Dead touch areas or ghost touches: the touch layer or display connection may be affected.
  • Bent frame, unusual heat, swelling or a lifting screen: stop pressing the screen into place and arrange an inspection.
  • Camera, sensor or biometric issues after the impact: the drop may have affected nearby components as well.

Avoid DIY shortcuts. Glue, toothpaste and household products do not repair a damaged display. A screen protector may contain loose glass temporarily, but it does not restore the screen or its protective sealing.

Five factors that determine whether repair is worth it

1. The total cost of an equivalent replacement

Do not compare a screen quote with the cheapest phone advertised. Compare it with a replacement offering similar storage, camera quality, performance, battery condition and software support. Include accessories, setup time and data transfer in the real replacement cost.

2. The phone’s remaining useful life

A newer device that remains responsive and supported may justify a screen repair. If essential apps no longer run, storage is constantly full or security support has ended, replacing the screen will not solve those limitations.

3. Other faults

Battery problems, frame damage, unreliable charging, camera faults or liquid exposure can change the calculation. Ask for all known issues to be considered together instead of pricing the screen in isolation.

4. The value of keeping your data and setup

Keeping the same phone avoids moving authenticator accounts, banking access, work profiles and other settings. That convenience has value, but you should still back up important data before any repair.

5. Warranty, insurance and consumer rights

Accidental impact damage is usually different from a product fault, so check any device warranty or insurance before authorising work. If the screen failed without accidental damage, New Zealand’s Consumer Guarantees Act may be relevant. Review the official Consumer Protection guidance.

What a useful screen repair quote should include

A clear quote helps you compare like with like. Ask the repairer to confirm:

  • the exact phone model and the symptoms being addressed;
  • whether the screen assembly, glass or another component is being replaced;
  • the part type or quality level offered;
  • the complete price, expected timeframe and repair warranty;
  • whether frame damage or another fault could alter the quote after inspection.

Water resistance after screen repair

Opening a phone can affect its original sealing, and water resistance is not a permanent condition even on an unrepaired device. Ask what sealing process is used and avoid treating a repaired phone as waterproof. Apple also notes that splash, water and dust resistance can decrease through normal wear. Read Apple’s water-resistance guidance.

Before you book a repair

  1. Back up important photos, messages and files while the phone is usable.
  2. Record the exact model, storage capacity and every symptom.
  3. Test the display, touch, cameras, speakers, microphones, charging and buttons.
  4. Check warranty or insurance conditions before authorising third-party work.
  5. Ask whether passcodes, SIM cards or accessories should be removed before drop-off.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep using a phone with a cracked screen?

A small crack may not stop the phone immediately, but damaged glass can worsen and affect touch, visibility or sealing. Back up your data, protect the area and arrange an assessment.

Does a cracked screen always require the full display to be replaced?

Not always. The repair method depends on the model, part design and whether the glass, touch layer or display panel is damaged. An inspection is needed for a model-specific answer.

Will my data be erased during a screen repair?

A screen replacement does not normally require deleting data, but no repair is risk-free. Back up important information before handing over the device and ask about the repairer’s data-handling process.

How long does phone screen repair take?

Time depends on the model, damage, parts availability and testing required. Confirm the expected timeframe when requesting a quote rather than assuming every device can be completed the same day.

Is it cheaper to repair a cracked screen or replace the phone?

It depends on the complete repair quote and the cost of a genuinely equivalent replacement. Repair often provides better value when the screen is the only major fault and the phone still has useful life.
