Why Upgrade Your MacBook SSD?

Older MacBooks can still be useful, especially for work, study, design, music and video tasks. A compatible SSD upgrade can improve the way the MacBook feels in daily use and give you more room for files.

More Space for Large Files

Store photo libraries, video projects, music sessions, work files and apps without constantly clearing space.

Faster Everyday Use

An SSD can improve startup, app loading and file access, especially when replacing an older hard drive or worn storage.

Quieter Operation

Solid-state drives have no moving parts, helping reduce the clicking and spinning noise of traditional hard drives.

Extend a Useful MacBook

For the right model, upgrading storage can be a practical way to keep a familiar MacBook working for longer.

OWC or Transcend SSD Upgrade Options

OWC and Transcend SSD options are commonly used for selected older MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models. Compatibility is model-specific, so we always check the exact A-number, year and current storage before recommending a part.

Best suited to older compatible models

  • Many 2006-2015 MacBook Pro models have practical upgrade paths.
  • Some non-Retina 2011-2016 models can support large-capacity storage options.
  • Available capacity can vary, including 1TB, 2TB or higher options where supported.

Important limits on newer MacBooks

  • Many 2016 and later MacBook Pro models use soldered storage.
  • Several newer MacBook Air and Apple silicon models are not internally SSD-upgradeable.
  • If internal upgrade is not possible, we can still discuss backup, data and external storage options.

Performance claims depend on the MacBook model, SSD type and system interface. Some SSDs advertise very high read/write speeds, but real-world speed is limited by the computer hardware.

Our MacBook SSD Upgrade Process

SSD upgrades are only useful when the model, part and data plan are correct. We check the MacBook first so you know what is possible before spending money on parts.

Model Identification

We confirm the MacBook model number, year and current storage type.

Storage Health Check

We check symptoms such as slow performance, low space, drive errors or boot problems.

Upgrade Advice

We recommend suitable OWC, Transcend or other compatible options where available.

Quote and Availability

We confirm part availability, capacity and price before the upgrade begins.

Install and Data Plan

For supported models, we can discuss installation, backup and data transfer options.

Testing and Handover

We test booting, storage recognition and basic performance before returning the MacBook.

Some straightforward physical SSD installs can be quick, but backup, cloning, macOS setup and testing can take longer depending on the MacBook and data size.

MacBook SSD Upgrade FAQ

Can every MacBook SSD be upgraded?

No. Many newer MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models use soldered storage. We check the exact model before confirming internal upgrade options.

How much storage can I add?

It depends on your model and compatible SSD parts. Some older supported MacBooks may allow 1TB, 2TB or higher-capacity options.

Will an SSD upgrade make my MacBook faster?

It can improve startup time, app loading and file handling, especially if the MacBook has an old hard drive or failing storage. Actual performance varies by model.

Do you use OWC or Transcend SSDs?

Raytech NZ can advise on OWC or Transcend SSD options where they are suitable and available for your MacBook model.

Should I back up first?

Yes. Always back up important files before any storage upgrade, repair or data transfer work.

How do I find my MacBook model number?

The A-number is usually printed on the underside of the MacBook. If you are unsure, bring it in and we can identify it for you.
